Excellent Games to Play with Your Toddler
There are many ways that young people learn. Reading, listening and copying are all common methods of understanding what something is or how to complete a task, but did you now playing is an important part of learning, too? This is especially true for toddlers, who can learn new skills by playing the right games with their parents or other adults and children. Here are four games that can help boost your child's cognitive, emotion and physical skill sets!
Hot & Cold
Perhaps you've played this before, either as a kid or an adult. A great way to help your child grow emotionally, while helping him understand rules, is by playing hot or cold. To play, hide a toy or other item they will want and let them begin to search for it. As they get farther away from the item, say cold, when they get closer their getting hot. This game will help them feel accomplished, and they'll be rewarded with the toy they love.
This is a great game for groups but can be played just as effectively one on one. Simon Says is perfect for teaching a child to follow instructions. To play you simply call out commands, and the idea is that they will win by making it to you across the room. The commands they follow need to start with "Simon Says." For example, if you say, "Simon says take two steps forward," the child should do as you say. But they need to listen carefully, because if you say "Take two steps," without saying Simon Says, and they do it, they'll have to start over.
If you have the room to do so, set up an obstacle course that promotes running, jumping, rolling, and balancing and then teach your toddler to make it through the entire course. This an excellent way to build coordination, promote healthy activity, as well teach them to take their time with various tasks and perfect gross motor skills.
Puzzles with large pieces are a wonderful game to play with toddlers because they help with so many different skills. Their physical skills will be tested as they try to actually solve the puzzle, and their emotional skills will be used, too, as they'll need to remain calm and patient as they try to complete it. Puzzles are also known to help improve memory.
Games are a wonderful learning tactic for toddlers, and people of all ages. At Country Day Care and Magnolia Ridge Learning Development Centers we promote healthy learning through play. Our Richmond daycare and Glen Allen daycare are both staffed by superior supervisors who love helping children learn through all sorts of means.
