Great Tips for the First Day of Daycare
The first day of daycare is a big day for the child, as well as the parent. It is important that you take special care on this day to provide your child with love and affection and gentle reminders about how exciting going to daycare is. Tell them about the the friends they will make, the experiences they will have and so on and so forth. You want them to want to go, but alas, chances are they will be a bit sad when you walk out the door. To best prepare yourself and your child for their first day follow these simple steps.
Give yourself time in the morning
Don't rush this morning. Wake your child early enough so they can get used to the new routine. The last thing you want is for yourself or your child to be stressed out on this very, very special day.
Provide the child with something from home
To help ease the pain of being away from mom and dad be sure to give your child something to remind them of home. This could be their favorite blanket or book or a stuffed animal that they are fond of.
Start a goodbye routine
Starting a goodbye routine will help your child understand what is happening and that it is normal. Parking in the same area, walking the same route and using the same goodbye phrases will all help. Stay calm, even if your child is upset.
Arrive on time for pickup
If you tell your child you will arrive at a certain time to pick them up be sure to be there! Children will worry if you fail to arrive on time. This should be a priority every day, especially in the first weeks of daycare.
Give your child something to look forward to at home
After you pick them up let them know that they have something exciting at home. A special dinner or dessert, a new book or toy, anything that will help take transition them into being at home after their day.
