Excellent Tips for Enhancing Social Skills in Toddlers
As a parents of toddler, or even children that are entering kindergarten, it can be difficult to watch your child struggle to be social and make friends. While there is not a one size fits all method for helping youngsters develop social skills, there are a few things you can try that can help them learn social tools they will use for the rest of their lives. Here are several steps you can take as a parent to help your child grow!
Encourage them to Ask Questions
One of the best methods of connecting with others is to ask them about themselves. Even many adults love having the spotlight put on them, so having your child ask questions of others is a great way to initiate conversations. Teaching your son or daughter to ask questions that can't be answered with a simple yes or no will help create a back and forth that will often result in a positive learning experience about themselves and (hopefully) their new pal.
If your child comes to you with problems regarding another child at daycare, on their sports team or at school it is crucial you pay close attention to best help them work through the situation. It can be very helpful to have them pretend to be the person that they are not getting along with and you can act as your child. This way you can show them the best methods of communicating with their peer.
Access their Interests
Allowing your child to follow their interests will help ensure that they are participating in activities with like-minded children. Whether this is playing an instrument, playing sports or joins the scouts, whatever it is they want to do will hopefully make them feel more at comfortable around other people.
It's OK to be Shy
What is truly important is to remember that some people are inherently shy, and that's OK. If your child has trouble working or playing in large groups, see how they do one on one with a teacher or peer. You may also need to limit time that your child socializes, as some may do well for an hour or two, but any longer and they could become irritated in the setting.
Another way to help improve social skills is to place your child with a daycare center that values social development, such as Country Day Care and Magnolia Ridge Child Development Centers. Our Richmond and Glen Allen daycares are staffed by friendly caregivers who only want the best for the children.
